Wed 19 Aug 2009
FLOATING WORLD & DARK HORSE PRESENT:
THE MARQUIS: INFERNO – BOOK RELEASE & ART EXHIBIT BY GUY DAVIS
Before his Eisner award winning run on Hellboy spin-off BPRD, artist Guy Davis crafted this gothic horror masterpiece about a crusader in 18th century France who is either a savior or a lunatic. He has been blessed with the gift to see demons hiding in human form and he is given the means to send them back to the fires of Hell. Featuring some of the greatest architecture, setting, and character design in modern comics history, The Marquis: Inferno will be as stunning and impressive to new readers, as it was to fans who read it years ago.

I think I think this every issue, but I swear this is my favorite B.P.R.D. yet! It took a read to get over the novelty of having Ba and Moon doing the artwork but after a second read I’m firmly convinced that their pairing with Mignola is the best thing to happen in a very long time. Beautiful!

B.P.R.D. - 1947 #1

While this issue may not be for everybody, I freakin love it. B.P.R.D. could very well be the best ongoing series out there. Period. Karl Moline’s art takes me back to the earliest issues, which is perfect for a character as important as Liz. But the artwork starting next month in 1947!? I cannot wait!

B.P.R.D. - War on Frogs #3

While I can’t say this is better than volume 1, I can say I’m having a hard time saying it’s worse. The first issue, after all, had Fear Agent, guest contributors doing the Goon, the Umbrella Academy, Mike Mignola, and the ‘greatest comic ever created,’ Sugarshock. But volume 2 offers more Umbrella Academy, a great B.P.R.D. story, Captain Hammer, Conan, and a new story by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba. The one added bonus for vol. 2 is that I got it for half-price at Emerald City. In any case, love this anthology and the new stories it has introduced me to.

Hey Arcudi and Mignola, I’m talking to you this time! Curse you and your damn Lobster! Just when I thought this series had peaked, you go and do something like this. DAMN YOU!!! The anticipation actually physically hurts! Consider yourselves lucky that I’ll have War on Frogs and 1947 to keep me occupied until The King of Fear…

B.P.R.D. - The Black Goddess #5

You know that brilliant scene in True Romance, when the drug deal goes to hell and the pillows get all shot up so it looks like it’s snowing!? This book perfectly matches the brilliant intensity of that scene. Haunting yet beautiful moments of serenity interspersed with total effing chaos. Christ, this book has gone truly epic!

A mystery unfolds, surrounded by absolute chaos and death. Favorite. BPRD. Issue. Ever. Not kidding. Really good.

The search for Liz becomes a greater search for truth. But will the frogs and a large new foe derail Abe’s progress one more time? Ugh.

B.P.R.D. - The Black Goddess #2

The B.P.R.D. team trying to compete with the Lobster for my attention is a bit like Aaron Eckhardt trying to get noticed in The Dark Knight.

So the master list of Comic Book Resources’ 100 Best Comics of 2008 is here. Of the 100, we only reviewed nine this year…although we read a few others. Tells us we have a lot more reading to do, I suppose. The list needs a serious re-order (in my oh-so-humble opinion), but it’s long enough to include our favs.
Here’s my personal best (of the nine we reviewed) in order:
9 – The Amazing Spiderman
8 – Buffy Season 8
7 – Freakangels
6 – The Boys
5 – Batman
4 – Hellboy / B.P.R.D.
3 – Casanova
2 – Local
1 – The Umbrella Academy
Of course, this list is fatally flawed because in some cases (like Spiderman) I only checked out one issue or collection. And I read a couple other things (including The Walking Dead and Northlanders) that I would put high on this list but failed (thus far) to review, so I’ve left them off. But such is life. Lists are still fun.
