This is what you’ve been waiting for, fanboys; Buffy Porn.
I do not use the term lightly, convenient branches and clouds (Or a wandering hand) cover anything too racy but the intent and actions are clear; Buffy and Angel are getting nasty – superpower style. -Bretzke
Oh P.S. there was kind of a story, but really, against that backdrop, its meaningless.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight #34

I have great respect for the universe and all the characters within it; their wit and banter, heart-wrench and desire I explore with every page turn. But… This was an insult.
The tag “Twilight” could have been a witty play on words that had multiple layers of delicious revelation, each more exquisite than the last like a layered pudding. What was delivered however was easy, a short walk to the well, whorish and beyond reproach. Words beyond four letters cannot express how bad this was. -Bretzke

The Whedonverse at it’s (sometimes) perverse best; immense and epic events contrasted against the minutia of the personal. What starts as practically flippant ends in the deeply dark. Typical to this book, its a deal changer. Big one. -Bretzke

This checks the box as a ‘Whedonverse” book, but the overall impression is that of something superficial and vapid. Willow has always been my favorite character and to have her given this lip service is troubling. While not worthy of being burnt (at the stake?) the best thing about this issue is the cover. -Bretzke

The central premise about which the story revolves reveals a simple question: why the hell didn’t the bad guys do this earlier?! This one attempts to stack on the gore but honestly the full effect only comes across once or twice. While this sets up a decent cliffhanger, it does little else. -Bretzke

Those unfamiliar with the workings of Joss Whedon within this ‘Season Eight’ universe need to get aquainted. There are heavy things going on but the mood is often considerably lightened by TVesque cut scenes and dialogue. With a twist at the end that may have some going “ew”, this issue is par for the course with the rest of the series. -Bretzke

A different side to the conflict this time. In what has the feel of a WWII resistance movie, we are told the story of Yvette, a reluctant warrior defending her native France. Good storytelling is ruined by an entirely too quick ending. Yes the interview extras at the end are interesting, but they only serve to buffer out what is essentially graphical short storytelling. Not worth the cover price. -Bretzke

If you don’t know about this series it’s not too late to jump on board, though ideally not with this issue. More plodding than before (pardon the pun) though in this case it’s necessary. Characters are drawn out of their shells and we start to see things develop. Though for this to happen at 5 of 8 has implications of its own. Should we be getting out our best black dress? Delicate line work accentuates the feel of this book, far less edgy than previous issues. -Bretzke

“Vampires are in and Slayers are out.” Cloonan + Lolos + Ba/Moon = This fanboy’s cream dream. The world of Buffy is a perfect one for this team. I hope they give us more in the future! And to borrow an appropriate quote from Captain Hammer (another Whedon character): “You see harmless death nerds…I see future super-villians.” A lovely thematic tie-in.
