While I can’t say this is better than volume 1, I can say I’m having a hard time saying it’s worse. The first issue, after all, had Fear Agent, guest contributors doing the Goon, the Umbrella Academy, Mike Mignola, and the ‘greatest comic ever created,’ Sugarshock. But volume 2 offers more Umbrella Academy, a great B.P.R.D. story, Captain Hammer, Conan, and a new story by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba. The one added bonus for vol. 2 is that I got it for half-price at Emerald City. In any case, love this anthology and the new stories it has introduced me to.

…I heard a rumor that there’s going to be an Umbrella Academy film. This book reads like the best works of Wes Anderson–captivating art direction and environments, a powerful blend of humor and deep sadness, and a smart amount of character interplay. Sad to see it go, if only for the moment.

Hey all. I’m prepping for this weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con (#ECCC for you tweeple out there), and started my art search early. Having never shopped for original art at cons before, I’ve been doing some research. And thanks to Jason Palmer (@FrnkCastle), I was lucky enough to find out about Dave Wachter.
I emailed Dave to give him the heads up that I wanted to commission a piece at the con, and much to my delight, it’s done already! And I’ve now landed on the theme for my collection: Characters of The Umbrella Academy (which I freaking love if you haven’t noticed). PAY DAVE A VISIT IN ARTIST’S ALLEY!! Rumor has it, he also has some great books. Thanks, Dave!

Dear God, two questions if I might: 1) Why can’t I draw like Gabriel Ba? 2) Why must there only be one more issue in this series?

By now, reviews are redundant: Still hilarious. Still really smart. Still gorgeous and original. Could anyone still be ignoring this book?

So the master list of Comic Book Resources’ 100 Best Comics of 2008 is here. Of the 100, we only reviewed nine this year…although we read a few others. Tells us we have a lot more reading to do, I suppose. The list needs a serious re-order (in my oh-so-humble opinion), but it’s long enough to include our favs.
Here’s my personal best (of the nine we reviewed) in order:
9 – The Amazing Spiderman
8 – Buffy Season 8
7 – Freakangels
6 – The Boys
5 – Batman
4 – Hellboy / B.P.R.D.
3 – Casanova
2 – Local
1 – The Umbrella Academy
Of course, this list is fatally flawed because in some cases (like Spiderman) I only checked out one issue or collection. And I read a couple other things (including The Walking Dead and Northlanders) that I would put high on this list but failed (thus far) to review, so I’ve left them off. But such is life. Lists are still fun.

Who let Kanye up in here? Spaceboy’s a tub-o-lard and No. 5 is a legend in the making. I love this shit!

Paterfamilias, a word I haven’t seen or heard since Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? An awesome word in an awesome, brilliant, kick ass book!
